Code Of Ethics For Meridian Rottweiler League

Purpose

  1. To promote the Rottweiler as a companion and family dog and to ensure the breed's well being by encouraging a high standard of care in the keeping, breeding, training and selling of Rottweilers.
  2. To safeguard the future role of the Rottweiler in modern society by placing special emphasis on the breed's outstanding mental qualities, namely its sociable and peaceful nature, biddable character and high working ability.

Keeping

As a responsible Rottweiler owner, I will ensure that every dog in my care -

  1. Is provided with adequate water, food and living space that affords the dog protection from inclement weather and provides ample shade.
  2. Receives qualified veterinary attention when necessary and agree to follow whatever vaccination programme is recommended and/or required by law.
  3. Is provided with adequate opportunity to exercise and socialise on a regular basis to maintain a balanced mental and physical state.
  4. Is managed in a manner which does not cause disturbance to others and understand the behaviour of my dog(s) shall be viewed by the public as representative of the breed and thus every effort will be made to portray a positive image.

Breeding

As a Rottweiler breeder, I will -

  1. Only breed KUSA registered Rottweilers thus adhering to the existing breeding regulations enforced by this registry concerning minimum age, hip dysplasia status and permanent identification.
  2. Furthermore only breed from dogs that are free from disqualifying faults as per the official FCI/KUSA breed standard and refrain from using for breeding any dog which suffers from a hereditary disease and/or defect.
  3. As a stud dog owner I will only allow service to bitches that meet the above criteria and exhibit the excellent physical condition that is required before a bitch is bred.
  4. As a brood bitch owner I will only use stud dogs that meet the above criteria and will not expect a bitch to whelp and rear an average sized litter more than once in a twelve month period.

Training

  1. All training whether conducted at MRL sessions or in private must be conducted in a manner that enhances the mutual bond that exists between a handler and his/her dog.
  2. At no time shall the dog be subjected to training methods and/or equipment that are unnecessarily harsh or abusive which could negatively impact the dogs learning and foster a very harmful image to the public concerning the use and enjoyment of dogs.
  3. All training shall be centred on developing and directing the dog's natural instincts to the benefit of the dog and in a manner that results in the dog being adaptive and acceptable to modern society.

Selling

As a seller of Rottweilers, I will -

  1. Not knowingly misrepresent the breed type, health and temperament of any dog or puppy offered for sale.
  2. Refrain from making unsubstantiated claims concerning the quality and/or performance of any dog being advertised or promoted in any way.
  3. Not knowingly sell dogs to wholesale dealers or retailers, commercial breeding establishments (so-called puppy farms), companies applying dogs for security and persons intending on using dogs for illegal purposes, i.e. dog fighting.
  4. Endeavour to sell or place dogs with persons that are likely to provide suitable care and appear to be capable of being competent and responsible dog owners. Prepared by Alex Varela on 16/04/1999.
